15 Home Remedies for Everyday Ailments

Did you wake up this morning with the turns of the season and find yourself with a scratchy, sore throat? Maybe you’re nervous about a problem you’re dealing with at work and you’ve felt nauseated? Everyday ailments like these can have an impact on our day and not the good kind. We don’t always have time to nurse ourselves back to health, to visit the doctor, or get to the pharmacy on time to find medicinal treatments for our issues — and that’s where home remedies come into play.

It’s probably smart to chat with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure these are safe for your particular situation, but once you get the clear from them, these home remedies are tried and true for other people who deal with everything from sore throats, to acne, and yes, even the dreaded hangover. In an “Ask Reddit” thread, people were asked to share a home remedy they swear by, and I have to say — they sound pretty simple!

1. Sore throat?

“For a really bad sore throat or itchy cough. Take a box of jello, mix it with only 1/2 the amount of boiled water. Dissolve the jello and then wait until it is cool enough to drink & drink it like a hot tea. The jello coats your throat and makes the coughing stop.” — aesorock

2. Upset stomach?

“I use ginger root, and it seems to work a little better than ginger ale for me. That said, don’t take it if you know you’re about to vomit soon, because it burns the crap out of your throat on the way back up. And tastes kinda nasty.” — Neurotikitty

3. Hiccups?

“Giant spoonful of peanut butter for hiccups. I have seen at least fifty people besides myself try it and it has never failed.” — sonsue

4. Heartburn?

“Disolve baking soda in water and drink for heartburn. Tastes nasty, but works way better than tums.” — kittens_in_mittens_

5. Signs of a cold?

“When the first signs of cold—sore throat, sniffles, head pressure—come on, you turn to the hot toddy:

  • Tea
  • Honey
  • Lemon
  • Alcohol (rum, whiskey—or whisky, or even some vodka, although spice seems to help)

Drink one or two, and then go to bed. In the morning you should feel right as rain. If not, I dunno, I’ve never had it not work. Drink another?”  — alexanderthegeek

6. Hangover?

“For a really bad hangover: ramen with spicy broth. And if that’s not available, a nice cold beer.” — The_Swolverine

7. Acne breakout?

8. Blisters on your feet?

“Vaseline to prevent blisters. Ever since I started slathering my heels with Vaseline, my blister issues have went away.” — laterdude

9. Sunburn?

“Soak a paper towel in vinegar and rub your sunburn down as soon as you get back from the beach/pool/bbq. Takes the sting out and speeds up healing.” — Facerless

10. Headaches/Migraine?

“I suffer from migraines and sinus headaches regularly. Hot 20 minute shower letting the water hit my face for a majority of it. Get out towel off real quick, grab a rag, wet it with cold water, ring it out so its not dripping, lay down with rag draped over head or at least your forehead, take an hour nap. Wake up…usually gone 9 times out of 10.” — _Wetkitty
