Gifting Wine? Make This Simple DIY Sweater Bag!

I have a feeling you’re going to be doing some gift-giving over the next week or so and if you’re visiting friends and family, you’ve probably picked up a few bottles of wine to give out when you show up at the next holiday party. It’s the standard gift and well, you can’t really ever have too much wine around, right?

While it’s a gift that doesn’t take too much effort, you still want to stand out as giving a thoughtful gift and so don’t just place the bottle in a paper bag or stick a bow on it — give it it’s own sweater!

Create a do-it-yourself sweater gift bag perfect for holiday gift giving and all you need is an old used sweater. Sturdier than typical paper bags, and also more stylish, this handmade bag can be reused and provides a wintery flair to your holiday gift wrapping.

Materials:

  • 1 sweater
  • 1 sewing needle
  • Thread that matched the sweater
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut the sleeve off of an old sweater that no longer fits or has been damaged to create your gift bag.

Step 2: Sew together the cut part of the sleeve to create the bottom of the gift bag.

Step 3: Place the wine bottle into the sweater gift bag, and just above the bottle weave a short piece of decorative ribbon in and out of the sweater. In knit sweaters it should be especially easy to pull the ribbon through the knit stitching by hand but for fabric sweaters you will need to use a needle strung onto your piece of ribbon.

Step 4: Pull the woven ribbon tighter to close the sweater gift bag and tie the ribbon in a bow to decorate the bag.
